Welcome to the December 2006 Newsletter |
Welcome to the second of our new style Step Change in Safety Newsletters. We are now almost at the end of a year that has seen record attendance at Step Change events, our first Boots on for Safety Campaign (developed from Canada's Safety Stand Down Week) and increasing interest from outside the UK and from non Oil and Gas industries particularly since the launch of the new web site. Thank you for those who have fed back issues on the site, you will see meetings, incident listings and, most recently, our email notifications have all been changed. Below you will find a snapshot of some of our most recent news.

Elected Safety Representative Guidance
Step Change has recently reprinted "Understanding the SI 971 Safety Reps Function" and "Guidance for Supervision on the SI 971 Safety Rep Function". We feel that each manned location should have a copy, firstly to aid new Safety Reps and secondly to refresh the knowledge of Safety Reps who have been carrying out the function for some time.

UKOOA UK Medical Frequency Changes - New Rules to take effect from 1st January 2007
UKOOA medical frequency is currently based on age: 3 yearly for under 40, 2 yearly for 40-49 and annually for 50 plus. We have studied the failure rates for medicals, based on these age groups, and discovered that there is very little difference between them. UKOOA has therefore decided to adopt a standard medical frequency of 2 yearly. The medical will include a risk assessment, which may determine that a person will require to be seen on a more frequent basis.
