Ian Aitchison Together We Will Achieve The Vision
After 3 months in the job, having taken over as Step Change Support Team Leader from Greg Washington, I'd like to share with you how I feel about Step Change and its objectives.

I have been involved in Step Change from the outset in 1997 via network meetings and enjoyed attending Lochter, occasionally accessing the Sadie database for incident information and using some of the guidance publications.

My belief is that the temple model is absolutely right with respect to the foundation, the 3 pillar strategies and the vision. I have been challenged on the feasibility of achieving the vision and my response to that is that if anyone does not believe it is possible, they should not be in the oil and gas industry. The vision is truly possible and it has to be achieved. It is totally unacceptable to keep hurting people.

New Green Hat Policy Effective 1st May 2007
One of the strongest messages from Boots on for Safety, was the need to be able to identify and support new starts to the industry. The feedback Step Change received clearly supported a common approach to a green hat policy, allowing both new starts and experienced workers that are new to installations, to be easily identified.

As a consequence, the Step Change Leadership Team (SCLT) investigated options for change and proposed the adoption of the high visibility green/yellow hat covers trialled by Shell and Transocean.

Coming Soon - Revised Task Risk Assessment Guide
Some of you may have noticed that the Task Risk Assessment Guide is not currently available to order from the resources section of the website. This is because the Step Change Hazards Workgroup has been reviewing the document and has identified areas for improvement:-

Hazard Recognition, Situational Awareness, Understanding Consequences.

The Guide is in the process of being updated and will be re-issued with three additional tools aimed at assisting the workforce to identify hazards.

New ECI Website
Completing an Employing Company Induction (ECI) is a mandatory requirement for all workers travelling offshore to UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) facilities for the first time. The Employing Company Induction is an important part of the common induction process and this Standard ECI course is used by most companies to ensure that messages are consistent.

Step Change Agenda Driven By Workforce Ideas
Workforce ideas to improve safety that have been put forward during the Boots on for Safety Campaign are driving the Step Change agenda in 2007.

Five new initiatives have been adopted by the Step Change Leadership Team to address some of the key issues raised from the Boots on for Safety feedback.

New workgroups have been created to support work on each of the initiatives.
